Netiquette - Playing nice on the Internet

Netiquette is a combination of the words “Network” and “Etiquette”, and is defined as a set of rules for acceptable online behavior. In other words it’s about to how to play nicely in the online world.

Since there are no 'rules'', such as when communicating online, when you are posting something on your blog or sending email we should always remember that there are “PEOPLE” on the other end and they can get their feelings. So it is a good idea to learn the underlying social rules of cyberspace.

Here are some Do’s and Don’ts I found from my readings on internet.

  • DO remember the other people in Cyberspace are all human beings with feelings
  • DO ask yourself, "Would you say it to that person's face?"
  • DO remember your words are never erased. They will always be 'out there'
  • DO be ethical
  • DO use descriptive titles
  • DO keep messages short and sweet
  • DO use paragraph spaces
  • DO insert smilies (emoticons) appropriately
  • DO watch your presentation, grammar & spelling
  • DO “RSS" (Read, Re-read and Send) before you post something to online

Don’ts to avoid yourself when you posting on cyberspace

  • DON'T break the law
  • DON'T use offensive language
  • DON'T jump onto a web page without making sure it's safe
  • DON'T be confrontational just to start a fight
  • DON'T use capital letters unless you intend on YELLING!
  • DON’T talk about religion, sex and politics
  • DON’T be narcissistic – no one likes a ‘me’ person
  • DON'T forward spam, jokes or chain letters unless a recipient actually wants it
  • Don’t make people read the same thing more than once
  • Don’t submit items berating violators of these rules - develop a bit of a thicker skin

  • B4N - Bye For Now
  • BRB - Be Right Back
  •  BTT - Back to Topic
  • FYI – For Your Information
  • GR8 – Great
  • IMHO - In My Humble Opinion
  • ISO - In Search Of
  • POV - Point Of View
  • RBTL - Read Between The Lines
  • RT - Real Time -or- ReTweet
  • RTM - Read The Manual
  • TBA - To be Announced
  • THX or TX or THKS – Thanks
  • TMI - Too Much Information
  • TTYL - Talk To You Later
